Hip-Hop: the culture, the lifestyle, the fashion, the dances, the movement, the influence, the RESPONSIBILITY......
Having grown into a powerhouse of the entertainment industry and an essential part of the social fabric of the world, Hip-Hop has the power to make or break the social consciousness of our youth. By using the spoken word as a catalyst for social commentary, both sweet and sinister, Artists (or Rappers) shine light on the norms and abnormalities of their environments. Whether true to life or fictional these lyrical stories are carried across airwaves and reach millions a day.
But what responsibility do the Artists take for the depictions they portray. How do we as Listeners discern the real from the fake? And comparatively speaking, how do we judge true talent when producers, marketing teams, ghost writers and labels control much of what we hear by controlling what Artists say. It is my opinion that the responsibility lies in the hands of the Artists and the Listener. The Artists must stay true to his/her inspiration no matter where or what funnels their creative process and hold true to their ideals as human beings. Listeners have a responsibility to do their research on the Artists they support in order to know if they stand for what they talk about in their music. Taking a dual responsibility in the patronage and creation of the music we endorse will forge the way for a more effective and high quality product. By thinking independently about what we create as Artists and what we feed our brains as Listeners we collectively join forces for a more authentic message about the movement of Hip-Hop.
One of the front-runners in this renaissance of Hip-Hop is independent artists Nova the Camillion, a featured artists on Iceworldmusic.net. As an artist he strives to be authentic to his environment and provide glimpses of unseen realities to his listeners.
